Dating Profile Photographer Sydney — Maggie, ROSE IS ROSE
Hi, I'm Maggie.
I've been photographing people in Sydney for over eight years. In that time I've shot weddings, newborns, corporate headshots, editorial portraits — the full range. But somewhere along the way, dating profile photography became the thing I kept coming back to. Not because it's glamorous, but because it's the work that seems to actually matter to people.
A few years ago, a friend asked me to help her redo her dating photos. She was bright, funny, genuinely lovely — and her profile photos looked like a completely different person. We spent an afternoon at Surry Hills with a bottle of rosé and my camera. Within two weeks she'd matched with the person she's now living with. I'm not saying I take credit for their relationship. But I do think the photos helped.
That's when I started paying proper attention to what makes a dating photo work — and more importantly, what makes most of them fail. Eight years of studying light, composition and what makes a person relax in front of a camera turned out to be exactly the right training for this.
Why ROSE IS ROSE.
There's a line from a Gertrude Stein poem — written in 1913, still quoted constantly — that goes: a rose is a rose is a rose. It's about the fact that things don't need to be explained or justified or made into something else. A rose is exactly what it is.
That's what I want for the people I photograph. Not a better version of you. Not a more polished, more filtered, more marketable you. Just you — on a day when the light was good and you weren't thinking about the camera.
Most people have never seen a photo of themselves that they genuinely like. That's what I'm trying to fix.
How I work.
I'm not a fast shooter. I don't hand you a location and a time and tell you to show up looking your best. Before every session we talk — about what you're looking for, what you hate about photos of yourself, what you want someone to feel when they land on your profile.
I've photographed people who haven't liked a single photo of themselves in ten years. I've photographed people who are quietly terrified of the camera and cover it well. I've photographed people who are completely comfortable in front of a lens but have no idea why their photos still aren't working. Different problems, different sessions.
The thing they all have in common is that by the end, they're looking at photos going 'oh — that's actually me.' That's the moment I'm working towards.
